E.ON to build one of Germany's first commercial Ultra-Fast Charging station near the motorway between Frankfurt and Nuremberg

Grant approval presented by Dorothee Bär, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure

Construction to start this fall with planned opening at the end of 2017

Further step towards achieving the ambition held by E.ON and CLEVER to create a Europe-wide network

As a commitment to playing a leading role in the transition to E-Mobility in Europe, E.ON has chosen Autohof Strohofer service station near the motorway A3 between Frankfurt and Nuremberg to be the first location in the planned Europe-wide network of Ultra-Fast Charging stations for which E.ON partnered up with CLEVER. Today, the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Dorothee Bär, presented the grant approval letter to E.ON.

Dorothee Bär said: "The main obstacle to expanding E-Mobility is not a technical one but rather people's concern that they will run out of battery power while they are on the road. The Federal Ministry of Transport has therefore earmarked 300 million euros under its charging infrastructure program for 15,000 charging points to be installed across Germany. Our aim is to help build a nationwide charging infrastructure. This will strengthen the motorists' trust in being able to recharge their cars anytime, anywhere. The more players there are supporting the deployment of the infrastructure, the faster E-Mobility can develop from a niche to a mainstream alternative."

"With our project in Geiselwind the future of E-Mobility is becoming a reality for our customers. They need fast charging stations to be able to also travel long distances with electric vehicles (EV). Geiselwind shows how it can be done - today and in future. The project demonstrates our determination to provide modern and powerful charging systems for electric vehicles across Europe. It is based on our proven capabilities in providing and reliably operating infrastructure for e-mobility," said Frank Meyer, Head of Innovation and B2C Solutions at E.ON on behalf of the E.ON and CLEVER strategic partnership.

Anton Strohofer, operator of Autohof Strohofer: "As one of Europe's biggest service stations we have to move with the times and continually expand the range of services we offer to our customers and guests. This is why, from the very start, we were open to E-Mobility based on Ultra-Fast Charging stations because we wanted our customers to be able to refuel quickly and safely as usual on their routes. Autohof Strohofer is located close to a junction on the A3, one of the most important motorways in Europe and therefore can be used by motorists travelling in both directions - this is a huge location advantage especially for a project such as this one."

For the station at Geiselwind, E.ON and CLEVER had taken a forward-looking view on the future of EV charging by building the station to accommodate four charge points with modular speeds ranging from 150kW to 350kW. Building this first commercial Ultra-Fast Charging station marks a further step towards achieving the ambition held by E.ON and CLEVER to create a Europe-wide network of Ultra-Fast Charging stations. These stations will allow the next generation of electric vehicles to charge a 400 km-range battery in only 20 minutes, and in future with 350kW even much faster than that.

Geiselwind has therefore been selected as the first location for a number of reasons including its strategic position connecting Frankfurt to Nuremburg and its wide range of on-site amenities. E.ON's regional grid operator Bayernwerk will be responsible for connecting the station to the grid and ensuring smooth operation. Construction is set to commence this fall with the planned opening at the end of 2017.

To further push the roll-out of smart and integrated E-Mobility solutions, Andreas Pfeiffer has joined E.ON as the new Head of International E-Mobility Solutions on August 1. Andreas Pfeiffer comes to E.ON with many years of industry experience in the fields of E-Mobility and digital platforms. He previously worked at RWTH Aachen University and served as the Managing Director of the international E-Mobility platform, Hubject, and the utility partnership Ladenetz.de. Frank Meyer: "I am delighted that we have found such a profound expert as Andreas Pfeiffer for e-mobility, which for E.ON is a strategic business segment."
